8th May The camp site “Complejo Turistico” is just 15 miles west of the ferry terminal at Santander. It’s perfectly placed for our last few nights stay in Spain. We both liked the site very much and under other circumstances would have stayed here for at least two weeks, however, on the odd occasion there was a strong smell of cow shit that wafted up from the valley below. Nowhere is perfect! Cantabria is a beautiful region which we enjoyed on our first adventure with the MH two years ago. The country side is lush green, with snow capped peaks, the climate is very much like the UK but hotter in summer and warmer and wetter in winter. The first 3 days were perfect but then, just to prove a point, thunder and lighting continued through most of Tuesday night. Wednesday12th, still raining, and judging by the sky it isn't going to stop. Still tomorrow we will be on the ferry homeward bound. But wait I am in ahead of myself.
Here are some views as you drop down from the Sierras to sea level.
The site is well equipped with good toilets and a large swimming pool, although empty as the season has not quite started, also a restaurant and store/cafe.
The pitches are grassed areas, and are all well kept.
Someone gave Mary an English newspaper, that's the last I’ll hear from her for a while.
We met a couple who coincidently had met David and Irene Myatt from Moncarapcho in Portugal, the place we left our MH last year. We had lots In common and may see them in the UK later in the year.
This is a picture from the site entrance looking across the road. The village, about 1/4 mile away, is a visitors paradise, very touristy, and very upmarket, it abounds with coffee shops, restaurants and very unusual artisan works. Not may people about, this time of year.
The cow represents milk and each chocolate bar has a nut stuck to it, identifying its flavour just in case you can’t read, a snip at 5.5 Euros? Did we buy one, of course. Her indoors said our daughter would love it as a little present. We ate it that night after a curry!
This girl was trying to imitate the snakes that adorned the wall above each dining table in the restaurant, you pressed a button and cider would pour from the snakes mouth into a glass below.
Mary waits for her pint?
Which is witch ?
(Mary’s idea for the caption)
Behind me the notice read, Colegiata de Santa Juliana will open at 4pm. We waited an hour and then followed the arrows, first pointing to the left and then around the back, up a very very steep cobbled hill to be confronted with notice on a door stating “Closed on Mondays” I was well pleased helping Mary back down the hill. Today is Monday! Why didn’t they inform us on the first notice?
And now something completely different. If you are a gourmet here is a tip, for £9.99 this slow cooker can be purchased from Argos. You fill it up in the morning with what tickles your fancy? When you arrive back from your excursion at the end of the day, a meal is waiting for you. At 500 watts all camp sites will cope with its power requirements and it is safe to leave. Usually I place it on a table outside, it gets too hot for critters who give it a wide berth.
